NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A former Norwich police officer has been found not guilty of having a sexual relationship with an underage girl.
Kenneth Nieves was acquitted on charges of risk of injury to a minor on Thursday in New London Superior Court.
The 45-year-old Nieves said after the verdict was announced that nobody won. He lost his job and his wife has filed for divorce.
Nieves rejected the state's offer to plead guilty in exchange for one year in prison followed by 10 years of probation and registration as a sexual offender.
The girl allegedly involved with him is now 23. She testified she began a years-long sexual relationship with Nieves when she was 14 or 15.
Nieves said the relationship began after the girl turned 16, the age of consent in Connecticut.
