Hearing on Skakel appeal focuses on attorneys

VERNON, Conn. (AP) - Prosecutors are raising the possibility that attorneys for Michael Skakel have a conflict of interest in representing the Kennedy cousin in an appeal of his murder conviction that claims his trial attorney was incompetent.

A hearing will be held Tuesday in Rockville Superior Court on a motion by prosecutors asking the judge to look into whether Hope Seeley and Hubert Santos have a conflict of interest. The attorneys have argued that Skakel's trial attorney, Michael Sherman, was incompetent when Skakel was convicted in 2002 of killing Martha Moxley in 1975 in Greenwich.

Prosecutors say because Santos and Seeley represented Skakel on earlier appeals of his murder conviction, they may be prevented from advancing claims that they, too, were ineffective.

Seeley says there is no actual or potential conflict of interest.
