HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A man on Connecticut's death row for killing a mother and her two daughters in 2007 says he wants to waive his appeals and volunteer for execution.
Steven Hayes says in a letter to the Hartford Courant that he cannot live with what he calls "cruel and unusual punishment" by prison staff at Northern Correctional Institution in Somers. He said he would make a formal announcement about his decision later.
Correction Department spokesman Brian Garnett says a disciplinary report led to Hayes losing prison visits for 30 days. Garnett said the department provides for safe and humane supervision of inmates.
Hayes and a co-defendant, Joshua Komisarjevsky, were sentenced to death for the Cheshire home invasion killings of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters.
