Home invasions leave many on edge

NEW CANAAN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A home invasion in New Canaan has people in town on edge and police say they are still looking for the suspects.

Police say that a home invasion happened Saturday night when two suspects broke into a New Canaan home in an attempted

When the homeowner confronted them, they tied him up and took off.

Police say two masked men dressed all in black broke into a house in New Canaan Saturday night. The resident was home at the time.

"They pushed him to the ground and tied his hands behind his back," said Lt. Vincent DeMaio of the New Canaan Police Department.

Another person inside the home called 911 and the suspects took off.

News of the home invasion put New Canaan residents on edge.

"That's frightening and a horrible story," said Maria Dumbauld of New Canaan. "God bless them, that's an emotional thing they'll have to recover from."

Police say the two suspects broke into the house in New Canaan between 9:30 and 10 p.n. Saturday. They also said a similar incident occurred at a home in Greenwich about a week ago and another incident in Ridgefield back in May.

Police believe all the incidents may be linked and they say there are steps you can take to protect you and your family.

"Keep all your doors and windows locked when you're getting ready to go to bed at night," Lt. DeMaio recommends. "If you have a security system utilize it, many people have security systems, but they don't turn them on in the house."

In this case, the residents did not have their alarm on and their front door was unlocked.

"I keep my alarm on even when I'm home and walking around the house," said Dumbauld, "which is kind of paranoid, but for good reason apparently."

Police are working with surrounding departments to try to catch the suspects.

"It's very unsettling that anyone is going to enter your home and [get physical with] you," said Lt. DeMaio, "no one luckily has been severely injured or hurt yet, but we don't want to see that happen. We want to put a stop to this as soon as we possibly can."
