Trial begins for ex-cop in fatal Orange crash

MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The trial of a former Milford police officer charged in connection in the deaths of two teenagers in a crash on Route 1 in 2009 is set to begin today.

It's been nearly 3 years since 19-year-old David Servin and 19-year-old Ashlie Krakowski were killed in a horrific collision with Milford Police Officer Jason Anderson. A crash scene David's father happened to roll up on, not knowing his dead son was inside the car.

"We saw the car that was a total wreck, we didn't recognize it, didn't know what it was, just a mess," Servin's father said.

It was June 2009 when Officer Anderson, leaving a scene in West Haven, slammed into the red Mazda carrying Servin and Krakowski.

Krakowski lived with her grandmother, Lois, who told the jury about the last conversation she remembers with her granddaughter about the NHL hockey playoffs.

"Oh yeah, that's my Ashlie," Krakowski's grandmother said. "First I told her the Red Wings won, which wasn't our team and then I said, 'Sid the kid pulled it out and they won!' We were so happy and that's the last time. Then i said to her, come home early, you have to go to school, you have to go to work, you have to clean your room. That was the last thing I said to her."

Anderson is fighting a manslaughter charge. His attorney, Huge Keefe, illustrated in court today that David ran a red light when he made the left turn. He also pushed to have David's past transgressions with Arizona law enforcement discussed because of previous alcohol and charges. David had alcohol in his system during the time of the crash, but Keefe's request was denied by the judge.

"I think the fact that he had three bags of marijuana in his pocket is relevant. I think The fact that Ashlie Krakowski was .14, 7 times over the legal limit is relevant," Keefe said.
