Jury selection begins in New Haven murder case

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Jury selection has begun for the trial of a New Haven man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in the apartment they shared.

Maurice Ross is charged with murder and carrying an unregistered gun.

He told police he accidentally shot Shalonda Joyner on Feb. 5, 2009, while playing with a gun.

Police say he told them he tried to call 911 but instead called 991, then panicked and fled.

The New Haven Register reports that testimony is set to begin on June 18.
