NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) -- The last defendant accused of taking part in the fatal random attack on a New London restaurant worker walking home from work has pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter.
Marquis Singleton entered his plea Thursday. The 19-year-old Singleton pleaded guilty under the Alford doctrine, which means he doesn't agree with all the evidence but decided to resolve the case rather than risk a harsher sentence if convicted at trial.
The Day of New London reports Singleton is scheduled to be sentenced March 7, when he faces eight years behind bars, rather than the 60 years he faced if convicted of murder.
Authorities say Singleton was one of six teenagers who picked 25-year-old Matthew Chew at random to attack on the night of Oct. 29, 2010. Chew died of stab wounds.
