MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Milford attorney is accused of embezzling money from clients.

Michael Hayes, 53, of 119 Coram Lane in Orange allegedly withheld funds from a client.

Investigators met with the first victim in August 2012.

Hayes allegedly withheld funds in excess of $125,000 from a life insurance policy for a deceased spouse and then used funds from other client's accounts to replenish a portion of the funds withheld, police reported.

In September, a search warrant was executed at the Law Offices of Meuser, Eckenrose and Hayes at 86 Cherry Street in Milford. This lead to the discovery of additional information and other alleged criminal activity.

Investigators met with a second victim and discovered approximately $50,000 had been embezzled from them in October.

Hayes told both victims that property was bought during the transaction.

Investigators determined Hayes did not complete any legal documents or agreements with the victims to borrow funds and purchase real estate.

On Nov. 15, Hayes turned himself in for two arrest warrants.

Hayes was charged with two counts of first-degree embezzlement.

Bond was set at $10,000 and a court date was set for Nov. 27 at Milford Superior Court.

If you have any concerns regarding activities involving Attorney Hayes, police are asking you contact Detective Nash at (203) 783-4730 or email him at rnash@ci.milford.ct.us.
