EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Fifteen years since Malik Jones died; fifteen years that a mother spent pushing her case through the judicial system, only to lose the latest appeal.
"To me, the over-riding issue to all of this, is that, it's clear to me, that, we've already put out sufficient evidence, such that two separate juries and a federal judge decided in our favor," said Emma Jones, victim's mother. "What more do you want? What more do you need?"
The story is well-known to many in the greater New Haven area. Malik Jones was shot and killed by an East Haven officer after a pursuit. A $900,000 wrongful death verdict was overturned by the U.S. 2nd District Court of Appeals.
"It's excruciatingly painful. There's been tremendous pain and suffering, and, I think there's a very deep wound that is left in the hearts of every single member of my family," Emma said.
"It's unfortunate for everyone involved, the Jones family, the police department, the officers, our taxpayers," said Mayor Joseph Maturo, "it's over, yes I call it a victory in this case."
Emma questions the Mayor's response, and what lessons have been learned in East Haven after 15 years.
"I can't define what the Mayor believed to be a victory for him, but when there's an injustice or wrong, and it causes loss of life, or pain and suffering to other human being, I have a difficult time capsulating that as a victory on any level," Emma said.
