Man arrested for Stop & Shop carjacking

Fairfield, Conn. (WTNH) - A 72-year-old woman was injured after a man assaulted her and stole her car.

Police arrested 58-year-old Ricky Smith on charges of robbery, larceny and assault on the elderly after they say he assaulted and carjacked an elderly woman.

Police say the incident happened on Jan. 27 around 9 p.m. at the Stop and Shop located at 1160 Kings Hwy Cutoff in Fairfield.

The elderly woman told police that she was putting her groceries in her car when an older black male approached her. The woman said he was wearing a yellow jacket, similar to that of employees who move shopping carts in the parking lot.

Smith is said to have struck her several times and pulled her from her car. He then fled the scene in the victim's car with her purse inside.

Officers were able to find the car and Smith at the Citgo gas station at Iranistan Avenue and Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport a short while later.

The woman suffered injuries and pain to her hip. She was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment.

Smith was held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 6.

Police say Smith has extensive criminal history for larceny and robbery.
