NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A man has been arrested on numerous charges after he beat an elderly man, hijacked his car and led police on a wild pursuit, police said.

Police responded to Fountain Heights B'nai B'rith Senior Housing at 345 Fountain Street for a 911 call at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

When police arrived on scene, they found Oleg Yarovinsky, 62, suffering from several wounds to his head and face. Another resident came to the victim's aid to try to control the bleeding.

According to police, a man with a gun approached Yarovinsky in the building parking lot and demanded his car keys. After handing over the keys, the victim was punched numerous times in the face.

During the attack, the victim fell to the ground and the suspect snatched the keys and took off in the victim's red Honda.

Police quickly responded to the stolen vehicle, as the suspect, Andrew Perry, 21, led police on a wild pursuit. During the pursuit, Perry drove the wrong way and blew through a stop sign.

Perry bailed out of the car and attempted to hide from police under the porch of a residence along Valley Place South. The residents at that location had no relation to Perry.

When police approached Perry, he tried to fight off the officers. His efforts failed and he was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Perry was charged with numerous crimes, including robbery, car-jacking, larceny, breach of peace, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, evading responsibility, driving the wrong way, disobeying the signal of an officer, running a stop sign, unlawful restraint, interfering with a 911 call, threatening, criminal trespass, violation of probation, possession of narcotics (near a school), intent to sell a controlled substance, obsession of a pistol and risk of injury to a child.

Perry's grandmother, Ms. Hilton, saw her grandson committing the violence crime and promptly called police for help.

Yarovinsky was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He is listed in stable condition.
