NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) -- A 44-year-old man was arrested for allegedly breaking into a woman's house and assaulting her.

On Nov. 15 around 5:30 p.m. officers responded to 44 Franklin Street, Apt. 6, for a possible domestic dispute.

When officers arrived, they found an open apartment and believed a possible abduction had taken place.

Detectives found the 42-year-old victim shortly after. She claimed William Diaz, 44, entered her apartment and assaulted her over several hours and fled the scene before police arrived.

The victim was treated at a local hospital.

Diaz was found shortly after walking on a street nearby, police reported.

Diaz had an outstanding arrest warrant from an incident on Oct. 19.

Diaz was charged with violation of a protective order, third-degree assault, second-degree burglary, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree strangulation, and third-degree criminal mischief.
