Man draws 14 years for fatal hit-and-run

LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) - A Bethel man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for killing a police officer in a hit-and-run.

The News Times of Danbury reports that James O'Neill was sentenced Thursday in Litchfield Superior Court. He pleaded guilty in September to misconduct with a motor vehicle, evading responsibility and tampering with evidence.

O'Neill was intoxicated when he was found by Bethel police four hours after the June 3, 2010, crash. New Milford police could not prove that O'Neill was intoxicated when he ran down Danbury police officer Donald Hassiak as he was riding his bicycle to work.

As a result, the 48-year-old O'Neill was not charged with drunken driving.

Judge James Ginocchio told Hassiak's family he hopes O'Neill's sentencing brings the matter to a close.
