Man fires shots during dispute with mom, girlfriend

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Wallingford man was arrested after firing off multiple gun shots during an altercation with his mother and girlfriend Sunday night.

Just before 9 p.m., police received a call that Bruce J. Waycott Jr., 36, of 433 North Branford Rd., was pointing a firearm at family members.

When officers arrived Waycott's girlfriend approached officers explaining that he was drunk and threatening to harm himself. She also said that Waycott has fired a shot at her when she was in the house.

As officers approached the home, a 12-year-old ran out of the house. Waycott's mother then exited the home with a 22 caliber rifle and surrendered it to police.

Officers proceeded into the home to find Waycott sitting on the couch. When they attempted to take him into custody he became combative.

Waycott's mother told police that during the altercation she physically struggled with her son for control of the weapon and a round was discharged.

Waycott was taken into custody and transported to Mid-State Hospital for evaluation. He was released from the hospital Monday evening and was immediately taken to the Wallingford Police Department.

He was charged with criminal attempt at murder, two counts of risk of injury to a minor, first-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and carrying a firearm under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Meriden Superior Court Tuesday morning.

Waycott was also charged on a separate warrant for his arrest stemming from an unrelated narcotics investigation conducted by the Wallingford Police Department.

He was charged with possession of narcotics and doctor shopping.

In addition to the $250,000 bond, an additional $10,000 was placed on him for the arrest on the warrant.
