NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police are looking for a man who robbed and assaulted a woman in New Fairfield on Tuesday.
State police say a New Fairfield woman entered her home on Newfane Road on Tuesday and was confronted by a burglar who had broken into her house. They say the man assaulted the woman and took off. It happened just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Area residents are concerned, especially since New Fairfield is a relatively quiet town.
"It's weird because you don't really hear it around here," said Steven Rogers of New Fairfield, "and that it's happening right around us, it's kind of scary."
Police are still searching for the suspect, who is described as a Black male with medium complexion, no facial hair and brown eyes. He is about 30-years-old, 5'9" to 6'0" tall and was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, "low rider" blue jeans and black sneakers.
The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
State police told News 8 the suspect had been walking through the neighborhood a week before the incident and that's what residents say scares them the most.
"That's even worse. We normally keep our doors locked, but it's scary it really is," said Jeff Lamanna of New Fairfield. "It can really happen anywhere, but it's just kind of scary when it happens this close to home."
The fact that he had broken into the home leaves some residents on edge.
"It's kind of scary actually because he could have gone into any of our houses and messed with any of us. It's just scary," said Taylor Nash of New Fairfield.
State police are asking residents who live on Newfane Road to contact them if they think they might have seen the suspect in the past week. Those residents, meanwhile, aren't taking any chances. They are making sure their homes are as secure as possible.
"I just went to the hardware store to get keys for the locks, so that we can make sure everyone's locked up," said Lamanna. "I mean other than that, that's all you can do, just keep your doors locked and hope for the best."
