NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — State police have arrested a 28-year-old man in the theft of an ice truck last year that led to him being shot and paralyzed by a New London police officer.

The Day of New London reports that Curtis Cunningham of New Haven was charged Thursday with larceny, criminal mischief and motor vehicle crimes.

Authorities say Cunningham crashed a stolen ice truck on Aug. 24 and was standing in the overturned cab when Officer Thomas Northup shot him four times. Northup told investigators that Cunningham made a threatening move and he believed Cunningham had a gun, but no gun was found. Northup was fired for using excessive force, but he wasn't arrested.

Cunningham was left paralyzed from the waist down and is suing police. He's free on $5,000 bail.
