NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Middlebury man is pleading guilty to a federal conspiracy charge for his role in an alleged campaign financing scheme surrounding House Speaker Chris Donovan's one-time congressional campaign.
David Moffa, the 53-year-old former president of a union representing state prison guards, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of conspiring to make false statements to the Federal Election Commission and impeding the FEC's enforcement of campaign finance laws.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 21. He faces a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Moffa is one of eight people charged in the alleged plot to hide the source of $27,500 in campaign contributions tied to an effort to stop state taxes from increasing on roll-your-own smoke shop owners.
