MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A warning is going out to people in Milford this afternoon, make sure to lock your car doors.
The warning comes after a rash of break-ins were reported over the weekend.
Fair to say folks living there are a bit shaken by word that thieves have been casing the neighborhood, stealing stuff from unlocked cars.
"But everybody had the same opinion as me, like wow not here," said Roger Reher.
Over the weekend Milford Police were getting a flood of phone calls from folks reporting items stolen from unlocked parked cars during the overnight hours..
Most of what was taken was easy to grab, including change, sunglasses, even clothing taken from under the seats and in glove compartments.
It happened along well traveled Wheelers Farm Road, as well as Lavery Lane.
It's not the first time the quiet street turned into a lucky break for the bad guys. Bill German tells News 8 his daughter's car was stolen right out of the family drive way.
"But we left the keys in it like some other people in the neighborhood," German said.
What is interesting about this rash of incidents is that at least five cars were simply rummaged through with nothing taken. However, police say they need to know about that so they are aware of criminal activity in the neighborhood.
"Is this going to change whether you lock your car door," asked News 8's Erin Cox.
"Probably so, for a while anyway," Reher said.
Police are responding with patrols in the area, but advise the best protection is to make sure there is nothing visible, like a GPS that would catch a thief's attention.
And simply, lock the car doors.
"Tell me what lesson your family has learned," said Cox.
"Locking our keys, locking our doors, we always try to be honest people, but not anymore," said German. "We lock everything up and that's the moral of the story. Lock, lock, lock."
