HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A parent's worst nightmare unfolded quickly like something out of a movie. A father left his 2-year-old son alone in a car as he made a quick run inside of a convenience store and before he knew it his car was gone and so was his young son.

24-year-old Devon Mills told Hartford Police he took the 2003 Cadilliac CTS because he was upset that 2-year-old Luis Trinidad Junior was left alone inside. Surprisingly, for a man accused of kidnapping, he's a father himself.

"I just want to tell his attorney that what he did was very unacceptable but he does have a legit problem and if he was not on drugs, this is not Devon. He is all about family, he is about his kids, he helps everybody out, he's not involved in the streets," Jessica Tourangeau, Devon's girlfriend, said.

An "Amber Alert" was issued last night after the car Trinidad was in disappeared from the "Stowe Village Mini Mart" on Main Street.

The arrest warrant reveals Mills drove the car to Bristol, where he left the two year old with a friend, who later called police.

The car was later located back in Hartford.

"He was high on PCP and I guess he was just trying to get home to his wife and his children," Mona Lisa Jackson, Devon's friend, said.

"Very, very hard and stressful but I have to say strong for my kids and just let them know that their dad needs help and he'll be home eventually," Tourangeau said.

Mills was arraigned Friday morning, being held on 750-thousand dollars bond. Money Mills' girlfriend says he clearly does not have so he will remain in jail without money and without his family by his side.

"I want to apologize to the family that this has happened too. My heart really does go out to you guys because I have three young children myself. I just had a baby three days ago by Devon and he does have a serious drug problem that we just want him to get help for," Tourangeau said.
