NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A mistrial has been declared in the case of a Norwich man charged in a 2006 fatal shooting of a 19-year-old.
Judge Arthur Hadden issued his ruling Monday after jurors sent him a note saying they were "split down the middle" in deliberating the fate of Bruce Gathers.
Gathers is accused of shooting Sean Hill of Norwich as Hill fled from a robbery attempt at the home of an alleged drug dealer.
A second suspect, 28-year-old Gregory Smith, was convicted in 2008 of first-degree robbery. Gathers' attorneys had argued that Smith was the shooter.
Gathers was extradited in 2010 from New Jersey, where he had been serving time on unrelated robbery charges.
Prosecutors say they plan to retry Gathers, who remains in custody in lieu of $1.5 million bail.
