Stonington, Conn. (WTNH) - Repairs had to be made after a North Stonington woman drove her car into the side of a well known pizza place.
The Hummer came crashing through the restaurant around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night, narrowly missing diners. No one was injured in the crash.
"He was sitting there with his girlfriend and all of a sudden he thought it was an earthquake and then the Hummer just come right through the door there and missed him by a few inches," explained Harry Spanos, the owner of Mystic Pizza II.
Police say 35-year old Jill Morgan crashed her Hummer into the restaurant where she is known as a regular.
"She was looking down and she... I think they told me she was texting and then she looked up and she tried to put the brake on and then she hit the gas instead," said Spanos.
Then police say she made a run for it.
Officers found her a short time later at Westerly Hospital.
One wall was damaged as well as the door. The Hummer went up onto this deck before slamming into the building. it was difficult to move it, because both axles were broken. Spanos said he is happy that only the vehicle and restaurant were damaged.
"That was my main concern. Once they told me that no one got hurt then I relaxed a little bit," said Spanos.
The owner says the repairs should be complete in time to open the dining room by Friday.
The restaurant itself remained open throughout Thursday; it has another dining room on the other end of the building.
