NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A New Haven man has pleaded not guilty to federal charges stemming from a 2011 house fire that took the lives of three people, including an 8-year-old boy.
The New Haven Register reports 26-year-old Hector Natal entered pleas Thursday to seven criminal charges , including arson resulting in a death, a charge that carries a possible life sentence.
The March 9, 2011 fire in a multifamily home in the Fair Haven section of New Haven killed 42-year-old Wanda Roberson, her 8-year-old son Quayshawn. and her 18-year-old niece, Jaquetta Roberson.
They became trapped on the third floor of the home. Fire officials concluded that an accelerant had been poured on the home's staircase.
The indictment alleges Natal set the fire in a dispute over a drug debt.
