NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — An online crime reporting site operated by the New London Police Department is getting credit for saving police time and taxpayer money for minor crimes that are considered unsolvable.
The Day of New London reports that the system also is promoted as a convenient service to the public.

Victims of vandalism, petty larceny or other offenses without a suspect use the site to report the crimes. Police say people often file such reports for insurance purposes and don't always expect the case to be solved.
So far, one case — the theft from a car of a GPS — has been solved. The owner said he almost didn't report the theft because he figured it wouldn't be found.
