Ansonia (AP) - An Ansonia man has been charged with falsely telling people he has cancer to collect money to pay for treatment.

Trumbull police have charged 36-year-old Stephen Bacchiocchi of Ansonia with larceny, forgery and conspiracy.

Police say Bacchiocchi put canisters at several businesses in Trumbull to solicit donations for help to fight his supposed illness.

Police say Bacchiocchi and an accomplice provided false documentation and stories about his condition, and allegedly cashed a $500 check from a sympathetic Trumbull resident.

Fairfield police had previously charged Bacchiocchi on similar charges. They say he collected at least $6,000 by placing canisters in restaurants and stores in Fairfield, Trumbull, Bridgeport and Shelton.

A message seeking comment was left at his home Thursday.
