New Haven (AP) - A Connecticut judge has entered a not guilty plea on behalf of a man charged in the death of his 4-month-old niece.

New Haven Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano entered the plea Tuesday in the case of 37-year-old David Canizares of North Haven, who is charged with risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment.

Police say Canizares was baby-sitting his niece, Makayla Aseltine, and his 14-month-old daughter on Oct. 25 when the younger girl suffered severe head injuries.

Police say he was holding the baby and became agitated when his daughter tried to touch his niece's soiled diaper, then swung the baby sharply.

Canizares' case was continued to Nov. 20. He remains held in lieu of $2 million bail.

A message was left for Canizares' public defender.
