'Water man' imposter in Hartford area

Hartford (WTNH) - An individual posing as a water company employee is attempting to enter homes in the Hartford area.

The imposter is described as a white male, 5-feet-8-inches tall, with a slim build and dark hair. He claims to be from the water company and has told a customer that he was testing lead in the water pipes. He displayed an ID badge that said "Water" on it. Once he was admitted into the East Hartford home, he stole money from the resident.

The Metropolitan District Commission urges residents, especially those who are home during the day, to be alert for con-artists by following these tips:

• MDC field employees wear clothing and drive vehicles clearly marked with MDC logos
• The MDC encourages customers to ask for identification from anyone who comes to their door - all ID badges have photos on them
• If you have any doubt about the individual, do not allow them entry into your home and call the police
