Branford (WTNH) - A Branford man allegedly carrying drugs in his car led police on a chase into New Haven.

It happened around 1am when police tried to stop 31-year old Leonard Anderson on East Main Street near the I-95 entrance ramp. Anderson jumped on the highway and threw cocaine and marijuana out his car window as he fled, police say.

Anderson got off the highway at Exit 51 in East Haven and continued on side streets into New Haven. Police say he drove straight toward a police cruiser, almost hitting the officer head-on. Anderson lost control of his car a short time later and did hit another Branford cruiser as they tried to block him against a bridge abutment.

Anderson has been charged with Criminal Attempt to Assault a Police officer, Possession of Narcotics, Interfering with a Police Officer, Reckless Operation, Engaging Officer in Pursuit, Operating Under Suspension, Operating a Un-registered Vehicle and Operating without Insurance. He is currently being held on a $75,000.00 bond.
