A suspect who the Major Crimes Unit believed was responsible for a carjacking in New Haven was found on Friday.
The suspect, Robert Thompson, 28, was seen by detectives working on the case at the corner of Temple Street and Chapel Street. He matched the description of the suspect and was taken into arrest. When he was arrested, he had a book bag that contained a pipe which was turned into a zip gun and several shot gun shells.
The New Haven Police bomb squad was called and the bag was determined to be non-volatile.
Thompson had an outstanding warrant in West Haven for a third degree assault on an elderly person and disorderly conduct. He was released on a $25,000 bond. He is also the suspect for several other incidents, including one that took place at Yale Physical Plant last week and two robberies that happened in New York City.
Thompson confessed to the June 6, 2009 carjacking.
He has been charged with robbery in the first degree, larceny in the first degree and other related charges.
Thompson is being held on a $2.5 million bond and is awaiting a court date.
