Greenwich (WTNH) - Allegations of human smuggling and kidnapping may be unfounded after police changed their account following a melee in Greenwich.
Based on a press release from the Greenwich Police Department, News Channel 8 and other media outlets reported Sunday that the department had detained 19 suspects who may have been involved in a human smuggling ring.
The original press release stated that Greenwich police were notified by federal custom agents that people had been kidnapped in Texas and were being delivered for ransom to Willimantic. Then, a large fight in the parking lot of the Riverside Commons in Greenwich was reported to Greenwich police Sunday around 11:30am. In the press release, Greenwich police said then that those involved in the fight were the ones being sought for the human smuggling. Greenwich police also said they made one arrest.
On Monday morning, Greenwich police issued a new press release on the incident at the Riverside Commons. No mention was made to the human smuggling ring. They also say they did not make any arrests.
We now know that four people were arrested by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) on immigration violations.
"This case is currently under investigation. Discussing any
further details about this case will be inappropriate," said Harold
Ort, Public Affairs Officer, ICE, in a written statement.
