New Haven (WTNH) - Two men have been arrested after a car was found in New Haven loaded with explosives and firearms.

The vehicle was found near the intersections of Grand Ave. and Clinton Ave. in the Fair Haven Section of the city around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

The car contained rifles, a pipe bomb and propane.

The police bomb squad was brought in and safely detonated the explosives.

"Our officers did an excellent job handling this incident," said Assistant Chief of Police Ken Gillespie. "This is a great example of the importance of residents communicating with police about things that look suspicious and the swift and thoughtful response of our Officers."

27-year old Jessup Bollinger of New Haven and 38-year old John Iannucci of Branford were charged with manufacture of bombs, illegal possession of explosives and storage/transportation of explosive agents.

They are each being held on a $500,000 bond.
