Bridgeton, NJ (AP) - A southern New Jersey man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for the 2004 beating death of an elderly Connecticut man who was in New Jersey to attend a wedding.

The sentence imposed Friday requires 28-year-old Edward Dukes of Bridgeton to serve 85 percent of his term before being eligible for parole. Dukes pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the death of 77-year-old Edward Ellison of New Britain, Conn.

Prosecutors say Ellison was outside the home of a family friend in Bridgeton when Dukes confronted him on Sept. 25, 2004. Dukes went into a rage and struck Ellison several times with a shovel.

Prosecutors say he raised defenses of intoxication and diminished capacity.
