PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island grand jury has decided against bringing criminal charges against police officers involved in the arrest of a Connecticut man who died last year after being released from custody.
The office of Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said Wednesday that a grand jury found that Westerly police officers involved in the arrest of Ryan O'Loughlin were "legally justified" in their actions.
The 34-year-old Mystic resident died June 9, 16 hours after he was arrested by police following a disturbance at a local bar.
An autopsy conducted by the Connecticut medical examiner found O'Loughlin had internal bleeding, liver lacerations and bruises and abrasions to his arms, legs and torso.
Attorney Mark Dana says O'Loughlin's family is "extremely distraught" by the grand jury's finding.
