MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Middletown grandmother is facing charges for kicking some kids out of her house. Police say 71-year-old Barbara Aiello's grandson had a sleepover but kicked them out around 4 in the morning.
A grandmother has been cuffed and arrested, charged with 2 felonies. Police say Aiello broke the law after she broke up her grandson's slumber party.
The incident happened on Risingtrail Dr.
She told police the kids weren't behaving so she kicked them out and sent them home around 4 in the morning, in the freezing cold.
They had to walk a couple blocks to their homes in the same condo complex.
"I don't know the circumstances and I know parents are concerned about their children. I don't even know whose involved besides her but I have known her for years and she is one of the nicest, kindest people you will run into," said Ed Beaudry, a neighbor.
News 8 did talk to the grandmother who says she didn't want to go on camera. She said she was having a bad night. Her husband was in the intensive care unit at the hospital and her grandson's friends were over and making a lot of noise so she kicked them out into the cold. She says she was not thinking at the time.
"I don't know what to make of it but I can speak to her character and I would allow my son to go over there anytime," said Beaudry.
People News 8 talked to in the neighborhood are surprised the police were called and that the grandmother was arrested.
"The can't take responsibility for their own kids and raise them the way they should," said Lee Lindsey of Middletown.
"So they have to call the cops," asked News 8's Bob Wilson.
"Yep,' said Lindsey. "Rather than tear the house up, send the kids back home."
"If it was that they had to go a mile or 2 miles I would understand it but they were just going around the corner. I mean it's craziness," said Barbara May of Middletown.
Aiello was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor.
