WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A man was arrested after assaulting a police officer in West Haven Wednesday night.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m., at the intersection of Washington Ave. and Brown St.

According to police, officers were working a traffic assignment at the intersection when a vehicle pulled up and an occupant exited explaining that he was having a difficult time with his nephew Joseph Mayorga.

Police said while the occupant was talking to police, Mayorga exited the vehicle and surprise attacked the officer, striking him in the face several times.

Fellow officers were able to subdue Mayorga.

He was charged with assault on a police officer, and two counts of breach of peace.

The injured officer was taken to an area hospital with serious facial and eye injuries.

Police said Mayorga is no stranger to them, and they have responded to his residence approximately 31 times from 2010 until now.
