PD: mom arrested, boyfriend wanted in shaken baby investigation

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) -- An Old Saybrook mom has been arrested and her boyfriend is being sought in connection with a shaken baby syndrome investigation, police said.

The arrest and search come after the conclusion of a lengthy investigation of a 7-month-old infant who sustained serious injuries, which were eventually found to be shaken baby syndrome, police said. The infant, who is now just over a year old, is living in special foster care.

Police said the investigation began on September 16, 2012, when Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital alerted the Department of Children and Families about an infant with injuries they suspected were consistent with abuse.

Old Saybrook Police were then contact, as the infant's mother, Crystal Dorothy, lives in Old Saybrook.

During the investigation, police were able to identify Keith Loftus as Dorothy's boyfriend and also a caretaker of the infant while Dorothy worked.

According to police, the investigation revealed that the injuries the infant sustained happened over a multi-day period in September, in Old Saybrook and Deep River, while in the care of Loftus.

Loftus and Dorothy fabricated how the injuries occurred to the infant, police said. However, their fabrication was not consistent with the life threatening injuries the infant sustained.

Dorothy, 25, of 2 Second Ave., Old Saybrook, was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor, second-degree providing a false statement, second-degree conspiracy to commit a false statement, interfering with an officer, and conspiracy to commit interfering with an officer.

Bond was set at $100,000.

Police are now asking for the public's help in locating 31-year-old Loftus. His last known address was in Deep River, but is known to be in the Middletown, Essex, or Old Saybrook area, police said.

Loftus is wanted on charges of first-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor, interfering with an officer, conspiracy to commit interfering with an officer, and conspiracy to commit false statement.

He is facing a $150,000 bond.
