PD: Thieves used pay loader to steal bank's ATM

GLASTONBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police in Glastonbury are investigating after multiple suspects used a dump truck and pay loader to steal an ATM from a local bank.

"It's unbelievable. I mean I can't believe that people didn't notice a truck coming in, they're taking the whole thing away," said Dave Motycka of Glastonbury.

Police say it was a violent smash and grab at the TD Banknorth in Glastonbury. It happened around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. Two men caught on security cameras were wearing masks. They used a front loader and dump truck to rip the ATM from the wall. While the bank has replaced the ATM, everyone is still talking about it.

"They were pretty masked up I guess. They were pretty disguised so I don't know how they got away with it," said Frank Christino of Glastonbury.

Police say the thieves stole a dump truck about a mile away from the bank and then came to a construction site where they were able to get inside and steal a pay loader. They took it across the street to the bank and ripped the ATM out of the wall, put it into the back of the dump truck and split it open. Once they had all of the money out of it, police say they buried the ATM at the landfill in Hartford on Liebert Road.

Police said the ATM had been smashed and partially buried, and the cash had been removed.

Later in the day, police recovered the dump truck in a wooded area between the landfill and Riverside Park in Hartford.

The suspects stole an undetermined amount of cash from the ATM.

"Well they had to drive down the road on Main Street. It's 4 lanes over here in Glastonbury, drive down here with a bucket loader and a dump truck so I don't know how they did it or when they did it," said Christino.

"It looks like a mask definitely and I heard there were no fingerprints so they must have been wearing gloves," said Motycka.

"Sounds like they really planned it out," said News 8's Bob Wilson.

"Yeah, it's crazy," said Motycka.

Police are asking for the publics help. If you have any information about the ATM theft, please call Glastonbury Police at (860) 633-8301.

"It must have been planned out pretty well. I couldn't believe it when I heard it, that it was really true," said Motycka.

"Your bank," said News 8's Bob Wilson.

"I know, it's crazy," said Motycka.
