MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police in Meriden are warning residents to cautious after two men claiming to be water department employees burglarized a local home.
The incident happened around 11:15 a.m. on January 26th, at a home on Sunbright Dr. North.
Police said the two men told the homeowners, a couple in their 80's, that there was a problem with the water.
The victims let the men into the house. Then while one suspect distracted the homeowners in the basement, the second suspect broke into a cabinet and stole $5,000, police said.
According to police, this is the second incident of this type in the Gravel Street area in the last few months.
One of the suspects is described as a white male in his 50's, with a chubby build, approximately 5'9", with a New York accent.
The second suspect is described as a white male in his 40's, with a heavy build, approximately 6', with a possible Spanish accent.
Police are investigating the incident.
Police said residents should know that City of Meriden Water Department employees have ID cards, uniforms, and marked City of Meriden vehicles.
Any homeowners who are suspicious should call the police department to verify the employee's status.
