New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - An unidentified pedestrian was severely injured after being hit by a car in New Haven.

The male pedestrian sustained internal injuries, including a lacerated liver and bladder, as well as two broken legs. Officials have not yet been able to identify the victim, who remains in critical condition.

The incident happened at 12:02 a.m. in the area of Goffe and Sperry Streets.

The driver, 23-year-old Ian Phiri, drove to Whalley Avenue where he pulled over and called police. Phiri returned to the scene and spoke with officers, who noticed Phiri's breath smelled like alcohol.

Phiri was arrested after he failed each of the standard field sobriety tests.

Police administered a breath test when Phiri arrived at police headquarters, over two hours after the incident. They determined Phiri's blood alcohol content was .123, .08 is the legal limit.

Phiri was charged with second degree assault with a motor vehicle and driving under the influence.
