Police investigate Redding vandalism

REDDING, Conn. (WTNH) -- Redding police are investigating several acts of vandalism in town. They've seen an uptick in graffiti in the past two weeks, and have a stern message for those committing the crimes.

Black paint covers up scandalous words written in graffiti on the ground; unfortunately, the scene in Redding has become too familiar.

"his has ramped up far worse than I've seen it in the 10 years I've been in Redding," said Police Chief Douglas Fuchs, Redding Police Department.

In the past two weeks, graffiti has popped up all over town: at the highway department, a community center, the high school, and even on a children's playground at the elementary school.

"I'm really sad because they destroy so much property, they really do," said Martha Simons.

Police say a speed sign worth about $5,000 was also stolen and vandalized.

"It's frustrating because of the amount of time and resources and energy and money that it costs our taxpayers to deal with this," said Chief Fuchs.

The black paint seen on the pavement covers up several derogatory, inappropriate words. Police were on the scene fast to cover it up because they didn't want elementary students who are nearby to see any of it.

"It said quite a few things on there," said William Roman, Redding facility coordinator. "I don't know if I should say it, it said don't blank with us and I won't blank with you."

It took him and other town workers hours to black it out.
