Police search for ice cream shop bandits

SALEM, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police in Salem are trying to track down some ice cream shop bandits.

They say the suspects broke into Salem Valley Farms Ice Cream shop and got away with some cash.

"That guy's not as recognizable, but I think that if anyone knows this fellow that he's...even with the mask you're gonna be able to pick him out because he has pretty distinctive eyes and lips," said Jane Scacciaferro.

She wants the individuals responsible caught. Surveillance video at Salem Valley Farms shows the thieves back up their pickup truck to the store. They get out, break a light, and then break into the ice cream shop doing a lot of damage. They smashed through two doors and tried to break through a wall.

"We can see right on video. They had a short crow bar and a really long crow bar," said Scacciaferro, Salem Valley Farms Ice Cream.

They finally made their way up to the office where they grabbed about $100 in petty cash.

The thieves finally noticed a safe and as they moved toward it the motion sensored lights turned on and then the guy in front looked up right into the camera.

Thanks to precautions taken after a 2010 break-in during the Memorial Day weekend. That safe was stolen.

"Last time was a very expensive lesson," she said. "When they got us two years ago they got about $20,000 from us."

This time the thieves were not able to pry it open, leaving behind images Scacciaferro hopes someone will recognize. The men are also believed to have broken into Fox Hopyard Golf Course in East Haddam.

From the police video from Fox Hopyard and Salem Valley Farms Ice Cream, the suspects are driving a red king cab pickup truck. They think the truck may be a Dodge Ram, or possibly a Chevy with lights on top.

This marks the sixth break-in in eight years.

"It's an ice cream store. Leave me alone," Scacciaferro said.
