NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police are continuing the search for a suspect who shot a woman in a Stop & Shop parking lot on Wednesday.

Police believe the shooting was completely random and they're describing it as a crime of opportunity.

Witnesses say they saw the 50-year-old Greenwich mother getting into her Mercedes at Stop & Shop when was approached by the shooter.

It was reported that the shooter reached for something in her car, trying to rob her in broad daylight and she was shot in the stomach.

A good Samaritan helped her and called 911 and police say they're not releasing her name for privacy.

Since the shooting around 2 p.m. Wednesday, she's been through surgery and detectives spoke to her and the chief spoke to her husband last night.

"He's doing well, surprisingly. I was amazed at how well he was handling the whole thing," said Police Chief Thomas Kulhwik. "He was just thankful she was okay. That was the number one thing. So, I haven't spoken to her, but according to her husband shes doing well."

Detectives say they have leads and a person of interest, but they have not released any names.

The gunman suspect is described as a 6' tall Black man, weighing about 200 lbs. He was wearing jeans, a black hoodie and black sneakers with white soles.

Officials say they've got some surveillance video from Stop & Shop and they're hoping with some digital enhancements they'll get a clearer picture of the gunman.
