DANBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police at Western Connecticut State University are investigating a possible sexual assault that was reported this weekend.
The Midtown Campus of WestConn is a happy, bustling center of activity with students heading to class and the library, or playing frisbee on the lawn, but it was inside one of the dorms that the attack happened.
"I just heard about it, yes," Sophomore Lauren Strang said.
Strang and Freshman Anneliese Koppel were busy studying for an Art History exam when they heard about the incident.
"I mean it's like wrong and I don't think it should happen but I mean, you kind of know that it does exist in the world," Koppel said. "I feel safe here though."
The two students tell News 8 there are emergency call centers throughout campus that are lit up blue and that campus police have a visible presence.
"They usually send out an email and they usually post up flyers around saying, you know, crime alert and they state what the crime was," Junior Diana Levano said.
According to University police, the victim reported the crime around 9:30 on Sunday night and was taken to the hospital. The attack apparently happened between two and four a.m. that morning.
"I think it's sad 'cause I don't think anybody should have to go through that and whoever it is, I really hope is found," Strang said.
WestConn's campus is public, making it more accessible, but it is not clear if the suspect was an outsider.
"I've never encountered anything personally but you know, news like that is always shaky, makes you scared," Levano said.
News 8 was told the victim gave a description of her attacker and campus police collected forensic evidence and are still investigating.
