SHELTON, Conn. (CTPost.com) -- There is a now a criminal investigation under way in the Shelton Finance Department.
A source close to the investigation said the amount taken is now estimated at $218,000 and is likely to go much higher.
After days of stonewalling and declining to release details of the Finance Department's sudden closing, Mayor Mark Lauretti said Friday "the city of Shelton is currently investigating the theft of public funds in the Finance Department."
In a statement, Lauretti said, "city auditors and law enforcement personnel are involved in the ongoing investigation."
