Shots fired at Channel 30 news crew

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - A New Haven street was the scene of two shootings Monday, and a news crew was the target of one of them.

No one was hurt, but the neighborhood and the journalists were shaken up.

Shaz Khan was behind the counter re-stocking candy when the first shooting happened.

"When the two thieves came in they said 'give me all the money, give me all the money,'" said Shaz Khan.

Both of the suspects had masks, were dressed in dark clothing, and possibly wearing North Face jackets. One of the suspects not only displayed a gun, but used it.

"Second one had a shot they fired on the roof to make sure," Khan said, "let us know this was actually a real robbery and that the fact that this is no game."

The bullet hole was visible in the ceiling in front of the counter.

Cerda's Market on Shelton Avenue makes sure there's always three people working, assuming that there is safety in numbers. However, it hasn't prevented the violence; the market was robbed last year as well.

Neighbors in the area are sick of it.

"Things are getting worse because this is a poverty-stricken area," said Sunday Keitazulu. "People got no jobs, no skills and then nothing's being done to provide people with skills so they can get jobs, so people are desperate."

A media crew learned that firsthand Monday: a reporter and photographer for Channel 30 were sitting in their live truck, parked across the street from Cerda's when two people walked by. The two went a little further down the block then turned, braced against a tree, and opened fire on the truck.

Four shots were fired. One hit the back of a silver car, which had just driven by the news van.

"So that's even worse because possibly they're targeting them," Khan said, "never know, because witness-wise, anything like that."

Police returned to the identical spot, just hours after they'd cleared the scene the first time. It's not yet clear if the shootings are related, but it's two too many for those in the area.

"Two in three hours, you know," said Khan, "hopefully it won't be a hat trick again, not tonight."

News 8 spoke to the reporter and photographer from Channel 30. They were pretty shaken up, but no one was hurt in either shooting.

Police are still investigating.
