Socialite seeks first-time Conn. offender program

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - The lawyer for a New York socialite who was arrested on charges of stealing an $11,000 fur scarf from a pricey Connecticut shop says she expects to apply for a program for first-time offenders.

Beata Boman faces a felony charge of first-degree larceny for allegedly leaving Richards of Greenwich June 14 with the mink-trimmed stole.

Authorities say a security guard reported Boman to police after saying she left without paying for the scarf. She was arrested in front of the upscale store.

Following an appearance in Stamford Superior Court Monday, Boman's lawyer, Mark Sherman, said she was distracted in the store because she was on the phone.

The program for nonviolent first offenders calls for probation and dropping charges if the participant is not arrested again.

The prosecutor would not comment to the Greenwich Time.
