STAMFORD, Conn. (Stamford Advocate) -- After eight months in jail, a city man who killed his 86-year-old mother before attempting suicide was given a suspended 10-year prison sentence and three years' probation.
During his sentencing hearing at state Superior Court in Stamford Monday on a second-degree manslaughter charge, Anthony Fiordelisi, 60, expressed remorse to Judge Richard Comerford for killing his mother, Marion, explaining his clinical depression over her deteriorating health clouded his judgment.
"My mother was so sick and at the time I was really depressed," Fiordelisi said. "At the time I thought it was right, but now I can see it was wrong."
Comerford said while he wished to impose a sentence that would dissuade others from aiding in the assisted suicide of gravely ill relatives, a suspended sentence was merited, given the mitigating factors, including the anguish Fiordelisi experienced during more than a decade caring both for his father, Ted, through terminal lung cancer, and his mother, who had congestive heart failure and dementia.
