Standoff in Beacon Falls ends

Beacon Falls, Conn. (WTNH) - SWAT officers stormed a house in Beacon Falls following a standoff.

Police with body armor and assault rifles surrounded 21 Church Street. They knew the man inside was drunk, had a gun and knew how to use it, so they were cautious.

First police sent in a robot, but Jason Litke tossed the robot back out of the house.

Then he came out to confront police himself. Litke, a veteran in his early 30s, was wearing an army sweatshirt. As he yelled at the officers, they shot him with a beanbag, and he hurried back inside.

Meanwhile the neighbors were watching it all unfold a block away.

"I knew that wasn't a real gunshot. I know a real gunshot when I hear it," said neighbor Zeff McKenzie. "In fact, I was telling my friend it sounded like they shot him with a beanbag or one of those rubber bullets."

The next sound they heard was police breaking down the door with a battering ram. After that, 8 heavily armed trooper storm the home behind a shield.

A few minutes later, Litke walked out in handcuffs with his face bloodied, and that was the end of the confrontation.

It all began with a call to police around 3 a.m. Marissa Mauro said Litke showed up at her home when he wasn't supposed to, according to a protective order she had against him.

Mauro told officers that he assaulted her. She was able to escape and made it to a friend's home in Waterbury, where she called police.

Meanwhile, Litke continued to call Mauro and made several threats, including telling her that he would "put her down like a dog."

"He apparently wasn't supposed to be in town today, or at the residence. So I guess when he showed up here and they got the call that he was in the property, they got a little nervous that they didn't know what was going to happen," said First Selectman Gerard Smith.

Police say Litke did have a shotgun in the house, but he never used it. No officers were injured, but Litke was taken to Waterbury hospital for treatment.

Litke was charged with interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct, harassment in the second degree, criminal violation of protective order, assault in the third degree, and threatening.  He is being held on $100,000 bond.
