State trooper busted for DUI

ENFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A state trooper is facing serious charges after police say he was driving drunk with a 4-year-old child in his car.

Trooper Jeffrey Campbell was in court Tuesday, arrested for DUI and risk of injury to a minor.

Police say he was weaving around on Brainard Rd. and when they pulled him over he stumbled out of the vehicle, confused, slurring his speech, and refusing to take a sobriety test.

"They are supposed to be out there protecting us," said George Vancott, "and to be doing something like that it's unnecessary."

Enfield Police say Campbell was driving the road in his own car, a black Mercedes, when he clipped the curb, crossed the center line and then hit the curb again.

Police said then when he pulled into a condo complex he hit the median and that is when they stopped him and found his four-year-old daughter in the back seat.

"What the hell were you thinking," asked Brandon Powell. "First of all, it's your kid and you arrest people like that all the time, pull them over."

"You are endangering their life, your life, and my life because if I am on the road at the same time something could happen to me or my kids," said Margaret Vancott, "so it doesn't make me very happy."

Campbell is on medical leave. He was injured when he was struck by a car while on duty in January of 2003.

He has been stripped of his police duties, while his case makes its way through the legal system.

"He needs help, professional help," said Kevin Reilly, "something must be wrong."

"Things happen and it's unfortunate, and people make mistakes, but it is obviously something you shouldn't be doing," said Ronnie Suggs. "He should know better."

"Hopefully he doesn't do it again, for his sake and why would he," said Vancott. "He will learn from this lesson and move on from there."
