WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- A Waterbury store owner was taken to the hospital after being shot during a robbery Wednesday.
The incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m., at Pereira's Package Store, located at 229 Homer St.
According to police, a male suspect armed with a handgun entered the store and demanded cash from the owner, 63-year-old Frank Pereira.
Pereira was also armed. As he reached to pull a gun from his waistband the suspect shot him in the right shoulder and fled without stealing anything.
The suspect then got into the passenger side of a blue, mid to late 90's Ford Explorer, driven by a black female.
The suspect is described as a black man, in his late 20's/early 30's, approximately 6' tall with a medium build. He was described as having scruffy facial hair and wearing a mustard-colored hooded sweatshirt with gold lettering.
Pereira was taken to Waterbury Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
