Police: Man fatally stabbed by brother in Griswold

GRISWOLD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police say a man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing his brother to death in Griswold Tuesday.

Police were called to North Main Street around 11:30 a.m. to investigate reports of a stabbing. On the scene, police found the victim, 27-year-old John Coddington, suffering from stab wounds.

Surveillance video captured the last few minutes of the man's life.

Police say Coddington was stabbed in the neck and bled out in front of a local gas station looking for help.

Matthew Benoit saw the whole thing.

"I just went down there to see if he needed any help," Benoit said. "He was laying on the ground, being held by his girlfriend, convulsing, bleeding from his neck. There was a river, not a pool, but a river of blood running down from the store."

It happened just before noon at the gas station in Jewett City.

Police say the men involved are brothers: Coddington is dead and the other, identified as 22-year-old Jeffrey Savoy,  is in custody in the hospital after an altercation at their house two doors down from the gas station.

"There was yelling and screaming, it was a girl and a guy," Benoit said. "I couldn't hear what they were saying because they were across the street and vehicles were going by, and then when he got stabbed everybody was freaking out."

Witnesses say the arguing and yelling came from behind a building, then the two brothers came running out into the street. One got into a truck and drove off, while the other ran to the convenience store for help, leaving a trail of blood behind.

"He seems fine at first walking around," said Sita Rum. "He was holding like this, and I asked him what happened and he said 'help me, help me.'"

However, there was no help for Coddington, as his life spilled out onto the floor of the convenience store. Witnesses rushed in to help, one man doing all he could to stop the blood, but it wasn't enough.

"There was a guy bent over and he had his shirt off and he was working on him," said Russ Gaudette. "I couldn't see if he was doing CPR or what he was doing, but come to find out later on he was trying to stop the bleeding in the guy's neck."

Savoy is being charged with first-degree manslaughter. Bond was set at $1 million. He was expected to be in court on Wednesday.
